It Pays to be a Social Complainer (And Responder)

According to a recent survey by UK comparison site,, users who complain via social media are receiving an average £52 in gifts back. And that’s only in the East of England. Nationally, the figure drops to £32.

The benefits to the consumer are obvious, but what about to the brands paying out these gifts? Fixing complaints by offering vouchers and coupons can get expensive – especially as more consumers cotton on to the fact that they can get rewarded for airing their complaints online.

But a goodwill gesture often does just that – confers goodwill, thereby increasing customer loyalty.  So, in the long-run, most brands would argue that it is overall a cost-effective strategy for customer retention and to reduce churn.
