Today, 71% of Pinterest’s user base of 72.5 million is female. The site is hugely popular amongst female users coming in 2nd place only to Facebook for the highest rate of female online user percentage. Pinterest is alive with women pinning about arts and crafts, gardening tips, recipes, fashion, home decorating, and more! While the number of male users has risen from 6% of online males to 13% in the past year, the active user base remains predominately female.
Pinterest is actively seeking more male users, and making changes to its site to make the content more appealing to men. Their efforts are centered around tweaking the search algorithm to make it gender specific. Here is a description I found in a blog on their site that shows how this change will affect a search to produce more manly results:
“If you do a lot of searching on Pinterest, you may already have noticed the results you’re seeing are better than ever. For example, say you’re looking for a new watch. Before when you searched Pinterest for “watches,” your results would include mostly women’s timepieces. But now, men will see Pins and guides inspired by what other guys have Pinned, and everybody’s results should feel a lot closer to what they’re looking for. Of course if you ever want results for another gender, like if you’re shopping for a gift for someone else, you can always use the guides to fine-tune your search.”
The change is designed to improve the user experience by eliminating excessive scrolling to get past unrelated content. The new search will be based on user preferences which should improve the experience for both males and females.
